Behind the music
About 1991.
1991 is British electronic producer Freddie Webb. Drum and bass is central to his artist identity, but his debut album, Odyssey, treats it as part of a wider set of dance-music influences rather than a boundary around everything he makes. Full Send [UKF10] provides an earlier example of his dancefloor drum and bass, before Odyssey expanded the range of influences in album form.
Released in 2022, the album moves from house on Life to jungle-influenced Thinking About You, with Who Hurt You and Reloaded exploring breakbeat arrangements. Its title track also draws on the electronic music Webb admired before developing his own catalogue. Those changes of rhythm sit alongside his interest in vocal writing and collaboration, giving the record a different shape from a sequence of D&B singles.
In his UKF album interview, Webb traced a turning point to seeing the Chemical Brothers at Rock Werchter as a teenager. He had been listening to rock and indie music, and the performance changed his sense of what electronic music could offer. The album grew from that wider enthusiasm, with influences including Justice and Daft Punk contributing to its direction. It is a useful introduction for listeners who know only his drum and bass releases: the different tempos are connected by the same producer's listening history and interest in songs, rather than being unrelated departures from his work.
