Behind the music
About Artificial Intelligence.
Artificial Intelligence emerged from London as the production and DJ partnership of Glenn Herweijer and Zula Warner. Their records helped establish a melodic, soulful strand of drum and bass, with early material appearing through labels including Soul:r, Commercial Suicide, and V Recordings.
The 2005 singles Desperado and Uprising became key records in their catalogue. Their wider catalogue includes releases on Shogun Audio, Exit Records, Full Cycle, and Metalheadz. The album Timeline followed on Metalheadz in 2015.
Integral Records gave the partnership another role: working closely with other producers and developing releases from their earliest ideas through to finished EPs. In a 2018 interview, Herweijer described quality control and a personal relationship with artists as central to the label’s work.
Their production methods have changed with the available technology. Early records were made with outboard synthesisers, samplers, effects, and compressors; software later allowed them to develop and compare ideas more quickly. Herweijer nevertheless stressed the importance of organic and analogue elements to the feel of the finished music.
