Behind the music

About Benny L.

Benny L is a drum and bass producer whose interest in making music began around instruments, turntables, and the records his older brother played. Discovering Dillinja was a significant part of that education. The weight and character of those productions helped shape the kind of bass sound he wanted to pursue himself.

His early records reached Shimon through a connection with Mediks, opening the way to releases on Audioporn Records Ltd. Granulate EP and Thunder formed part of that first catalogue. Studying music in Bristol helped him develop the practical side of production, alongside the record-shop and pirate-radio influences he had grown up with.

The Route Zero EP brought him to Metalheadz in 2017. Its Low Blow became a defining early record, with the label identifying the rolling drums and older-school character that accompanied his distinctive bass work. It gave listeners a clear introduction to his music at a point when his releases were reaching a wider audience.

Benny’s interviews from that period describe a producer refining his own methods rather than arriving with everything already worked out. His connection with Shimon continued through studio work and collaborations, while Metalheadz provided another home for his solo records. For a first listen, Low Blow remains a direct route into the rolling, bass-led strand of the catalogue that helped establish his name.
