Behind the music

About Burr Oak.

Burr Oak is the French drum and bass partnership of The Clamps and Opsen. The two producers bring earlier experience in rock bands and electronic music into a project built around heavy sound design, melody, and stories that extend across several records.

Their 2020 Hawkeye EP EP was their first release on Eatbrain. Its imagery drew on Western films and the landscape around them, while blues and grunge informed the musical ideas. Both producers contributed vocals, with those parts treated as another way to carry the record’s atmosphere.

They work together on drums, bass, and synthesis rather than dividing the project into fixed roles. Some sketches begin separately, but the pair finish them together, taking turns between designing sounds and arranging the result. A Roland Juno-106, followed by a Juno-60 software emulation, supplied some of their more melancholy synth tones.

In April 2023, Eatbrain released their 18-track debut album, Somewhere We Belong. Its fictional world follows Scruggs and Sonny Jim, the duo’s outlaw alter egos, across a connected set of recordings. Later work includes I Want You with Magnetude and Rave Machine with Audio, extending their collaborations beyond the duo’s own narrative.
