Danny Byrd

Danny Byrd is a drum and bass producer and DJ from Bath, known for vocal production that draws on soul, hip-hop, and rave music. One of the early artists signed to Hospital Records, he built his catalogue around songs as well as club tracks.

His debut album, Supersized, arrived in 2008. Its production was less straightforward than the finished record might suggest: moving from hardware to an early computer setup had interrupted his progress, and the album followed several difficult years of adapting his working methods.

The breakthrough came partly through simplifying. An early sketch built around a jungle break and an 808 drum machine became 'Shock Out', while 'Gold Rush' grew from a studio session with the Brookes Brothers. The collaborators traded musical parts between their computers, dividing the drums, vocal edits, and sound design between them.

Byrd continued the album format with Golden Ticket in 2013. His interest in vocals also shapes the writing itself: he has described changing a bassline to fit a singer's performance, allowing the song to guide the production rather than treating the voice as a finishing touch.
