Behind the music
About Document One.
Document One are the drum and bass duo of Joe and Matt, who met while studying music production at college in Oxford. Their shared interest in electronic music developed through both the classroom and nights out, before the partnership became a recording project of its own. They worked in dubstep before returning to drum and bass for their later releases.
They joined Shogun Audio in 2018 with LSD, a record the label presented through its jazz references and modern bass production. Their self-titled debut album, Document One, followed in 2019. Subsequent releases included a collaborative project with Levela, while their recording relationship increasingly developed through Shogun's sister label, Elevate Records.
The two-part Coordinates project clarified that direction. Speaking about its creation, Joe explained that he and Matt had written 10 tracks as a connected body of work before deciding to release them as two EPs. He described the project as music made for people to enjoy on a dancefloor, and said the less formal structure had taken away some of the pressure associated with a second album. The move to Elevate gave the pair a home for that approach, with Joe describing it as some of the most enjoyable writing he had done.
