Behind the music

About Dr Meaker.

Dr Meaker grew from Clive Meaker’s Bristol productions into a live drum and bass band, bringing soul singers, brass and a rhythm section into music built for sound systems. Formed in 2004, the group developed through local connections, with Meaker producing and playing keyboards. Meaker formed the live band so he could perform his productions on the road.

The debut album, A Lesson From The Speaker, arrived in 2008, followed by Dirt & Soul in 2016. Along the way, Right Back paired Dr Meaker with Kosheen vocalist Sian Evans on V Recordings. Meaker has described beginning with a feeling, then bringing soul and grit into the writing.

That approach runs through the third album, Distorted Sun, released in November 2024. Terri Walker features on Distant City, a song the pair wrote together in Bristol, while Celestine sings Simple Complications. Meaker also helped shape the accompanying films, taking the latter song onto Stapleton Road to capture the people and everyday life around the band’s home city.
