Behind the music
About Dutta.
Dutta is a Manchester drum and bass producer whose relationship with Souped Up Records has been a substantial part of his recording career. The Dominos arrived in 2018, followed by a second instalment. Working with Serum gave him both a release outlet and someone prepared to push his ideas further in the studio.
His progress suffered a serious interruption when a computer crash destroyed years of projects in late 2018. Speaking to UKF the following year, he described rebuilding his sounds and finding his enthusiasm again. The experience changed how he worked, while releases and collaborations helped him return to making music regularly.
His own Informal. followed in 2019. In a later interview, Dutta explained that he wanted to offer other producers the sort of opportunity a label had given him. His involvement with Souped Up also continued, including Tokyo Drift with Bone Slim and Moet, a collaboration with Serum for the label’s fifth-anniversary compilation.
By the time of the three-track Dom Perignon project in 2024, he had spent several months concentrating on improving the musical side of his production. He described wanting stronger songwriting and a more mature approach, while retaining the character listeners recognised. The melodic jump-up associated with his Souped Up records developed through that attention to how the whole track was written.
