Behind the music

About General Levy.

General Levy is a British reggae and jungle MC whose distinctive hiccup delivery came out of London's sound-system culture. Growing up in Harlesden, he absorbed Jamaican dancehall and the work of British MCs before developing his own way of using the microphone.

He had already made reggae records when M-Beat approached him about Incredible. Released in 1994, the record brought his vocal into jungle and reached the UK top 10. Levy has described how the faster setting gave him room to use the rapid delivery he had been developing live, with M-Beat and the studio team shaping the production around it. The result became the recording most closely associated with his name.

That success is one chapter in a longer career across reggae and bass music. His early work with Fashion Records and later recordings with producers from different scenes show a vocalist with roots beyond a single anthem. Looking back in interviews, Levy has consistently placed the song within that history of sound systems, toasting, and finding a personal style on the mic. In a 2024 retrospective, he recalled recording its vocal in a single take.
