Behind the music
About Gydra.
Gydra is the Russian drum and bass partnership of Eugene Besman, known as DJ Bes, and Nikolay Shilov, who produces as Menfort. Bes came to the partnership through the Neuropunk podcast and TAMRECORDS, while Shilov was producing in Moscow.
Their records have appeared on Eatbrain, Blackout, Bad Taste, Renegade Hardware, and Cause 4 Concern. In 2020, Eatbrain released their first full-length album, Snake Monastery. Its 15 tracks were presented within the label’s fictional world of an adventurer establishing a serpentine temple, giving the release a narrative framework alongside the music.
The album includes the Nuvertal collaboration Meditation and Wipe with IHR. Brief pieces such as Monastery Gate and Fate sit among the longer tracks, making the record more than a sequence of standalone singles.
Gydra’s work also forms part of Neuropunk Records’ catalogue. They have released the Junk Box projects and Neft EP through the label.
