Behind the music
About Kleu.
Kleu are Brighton’s David Webster, also known as Junior Red, and Kirk Mills, who DJed as Arcane. They first worked together when Webster came to record a vocal for one of Mills’ tracks. The session led to a partnership, and a rebuilt version of that early tune became the title track of their Big Time in 2019.
Both brought experience from the booth. Webster had spent years MCing, including touring with Aphrodite, while Mills held DJ residencies around Brighton and London. They learned production together and split the studio work equally, committing to regular weekday sessions as the Kleu catalogue took shape.
Their releases have appeared on Audioporn Records Ltd, Right Good Records, DeVice and Jungle Cakes. Collaborations are a recurring part of the music: Smoking Love brought in Navigator, while work with pyxis, AKAS and Sola widened their Grand Theft Audio Recordings UK releases.
The range also reflects the gigs they play, from old-school and jungle events to jump-up nights. They favour tracks that can earn their place on a dancefloor, but leave room to meet another artist halfway in the studio. Mills has described the importance of an open mind in those sessions; Webster’s version is simpler: leave your ego at the door.
