Behind the music
About Lenzman.
Lenzman was Dutch drum and bass DJ and producer Teije van Vliet, originally from Leiden and later based in Amsterdam. His music brought drum and bass into conversation with hip-hop, jazz, and soul, often through vocal collaboration and an unhurried sense of groove. He died on 11 July 2026.
His debut album, Looking at the Stars, appeared on Metalheadz in 2014. Bobby followed in 2019, with contributions from DRS, Children Of Zeus, LSB, and Artificial Intelligence. Its personal context mattered as much as its guest list: becoming a father prompted van Vliet to revisit his childhood, his daughter supplied the title through the name of her stuffed toy, and his father drew the cover.
In 2016 he founded The North Quarter, named after the Leiden district where he had lived. In a DJ Mag interview, he compared running the label to sharing hip-hop tapes with school friends: the wish to introduce other people to music he loved had remained the same. He sought individual sounds rather than an established fanbase, giving the imprint room for contrasting approaches. That combination of personal writing and musical curiosity connects his own records with the platform he built for others.
