Behind the music
About Minor Forms.
Submotive is the solo alias of James Davidson, a Bournemouth-based drum and bass DJ, producer, and engineer with a deep legacy in the scene. Formerly one half of Ulterior Motive, Davidson helped shape a wave of futuristic, high-fidelity D&B through releases on labels like Metalheadz and Shogun Audio. As Submotive, he continues to build on that legacy with a sound that fuses precision engineering, rich musicality, and dancefloor pressure.
A co-founder of Guidance, the label known for pushing forward-thinking drum and bass, Submotive has carved out a distinct space with his solo work. His productions are marked by crisp drum programming, immersive atmospheres, and subtle injections of funk and soul — a combination that keeps both DJs and listeners engaged.
Beyond the realm of 174 BPM, Davidson is also known for his collaborative work with Goldie on the downtempo project Subjective, where his engineering and compositional expertise play a central role. This cross-genre versatility underscores his depth as a producer, bringing cinematic scope and emotional nuance to everything he touches.
With international tours, a growing catalogue of releases on respected imprints, and a reputation for excellence both in the studio and on stage, Submotive continues to push the boundaries of modern drum and bass.
