Behind the music
About Misanthrop.
Misanthrop is the German drum and bass producer Michael Bräuninger, who combines music with his own visual work. Alongside his solo releases, he co-runs Neosignal with Phace, a label they originally created as a home for their own recordings before opening it to other artists.
His solo albums include Misanthrop, Analog, and Universe. Collaboration with Phace has also been a substantial part of his work, including From Deep Space and Raum und Zeit. Rather than separating production from presentation, Bräuninger handles artwork, animation, editing, and videos as part of the same creative process.
The 2026 album Trashworld. took shape from a pool of tracks he had been making for his own DJ sets. He selected music that shared a feeling, then developed the larger theme around it. In his account, the title offered an ironic response to a world of bad news and a way to release anger through making music.
That self-contained approach also shapes how he releases records. For Trashworld., he chose singles according to what felt right at the time, making the accompanying visual material himself rather than following a long promotional plan. The record includes Flashback, Slanted, and Deep Down Raw.
