Behind the music

About Mixmaster Doc.

Mixmaster Doc is American producer and DJ Dan Brady. Raised in New Jersey, he moved to South Carolina and developed a drum and bass career that began with a signing to Doc Scott's 31 Records. The name came from an earlier ambition to work in medicine, a path he left as music took over.

His catalogue connects the atmospheric side of drum and bass with soulful liquid, and includes releases through Innerground Records, Fokuz Recordings, and Integral Records. His own description of the music emphasises jazz-inflected breakbeats, while a 2009 Driven AM biography placed classic drum and bass breaks and atmosphere at the centre of his production.

Collaboration is a recurring part of that work. On the Reaching EP, released by Driven AM Recordings in December 2021, the title track brings together Mixmaster Doc, Dave Shichman, and Bernzilla. The four-track release also includes his solo Backbite and Stutter Dub, plus Lousy Cooks with Shichman. The same label's catalogue credits Air and Fantasia jointly to jms.mth, Mixmaster Doc, and Dave Shichman.
