Behind the music

About Nathan Smoker.

Nathan Smoker is a singer, songwriter, and producer from south-east London, working between electronic music, soul, and rap collaborations. His musical background began on stage: he appeared in the West End production of Oliver! as a child, later developing a career in recording, writing, and vocal production.

He describes soul and electronic music as the areas in which he feels most comfortable. His influences include Rag’n’Bone Man and Tom Jones, and his approach combines a husky lower register with a more forceful delivery when a song calls for it. He also writes toplines and produces.

Drum and bass listeners may know him through No Warning, his 2023 collaboration with James Hiraeth. Other collaborators include T & Sugah, Zdot, Zac Samuel, and The Manor. His work with rapper Tommy B includes songwriting as well as vocals.

For Smoker, recording is a collaborative process. He describes beginning projects by discussing the intended direction with the other artist, then shaping his performance and writing around the song they want to make.
