Behind the music
About Navigator.
Navigator is a London MC and vocalist whose career links reggae sound systems with jungle and breakbeat. He began performing in 1979, working through North London sounds including Phaze One, First Choice and Fatman Hi-Fi. In 1985 he joined Unity Hi-Power alongside the future Ragga Twins, developing the vocal projection and writing that would carry into his later work.
After leaving the sound-system circuit, he joined the Ragga Twins as a hype MC for their rave performances. That move gave him a way into the emerging jungle scene without leaving his reggae roots behind. He later became a voice on Kool FM, recalling the station’s early-1990s jungle years in his accounts of the music’s development.
A further turning point came in 1998, when he was invited to try a live show with the Freestylers in Manchester. The performance led to a deal and vocals on Ruffneck and Warning.
