Behind the music

About Prolix.

Prolix is British drum and bass producer Chris McCarthy. Raised in Brighton and later based in London, he brings a rock background into detailed electronic production, with a catalogue that includes collaborations, solo releases, and his own Trendkill Records imprint.

His 2019 debut solo album, Murder Mile, appeared on Blackout Music NL. Its title refers to the Hackney area where he was living, and its collaborators include Black Sun Empire and DC Breaks. It followed an earlier collaborative album with Gridlok, a distinction worth keeping when exploring his discography.

Speaking to UKF about Murder Mile, McCarthy described wanting both the drum and bass he liked to play and his wider musical influences to appear on the record. He preferred working with collaborators in the same studio, where ideas could be developed and judged together rather than lost in exchanges online. His work outside the Prolix catalogue also includes audio post-production and bespoke music for films, games, and adverts through Audio & Motion. That background offers another perspective on his attention to sound: club tracks are one part of a wider working life in music and audio.
