Behind the music

About Quadrant.

Quadrant is Leigh Caplan, a Seattle drum and bass producer whose music draws on the technical funk of the late 1990s. He has cited the sound of Wormhole among his formative influences, but groove matters as much to him as the machinery of a bassline.

His solo work sits alongside a longstanding partnership with Iris, his wife Karen. Their first joint release, Anthropocene, appeared on Metalheadz in 2012. They later joined Kid Hops for 206, released through Commercial Suicide in 2015, bringing three members of Seattle’s scene together on one album.

Collaborations have remained an important part of Caplan’s catalogue. Ghostfish with DLR and Intuition with Ulterior Motive put different studio partnerships to work, while the solo Offset release on Sofa Sound offers a useful counterpoint. Each makes room for detailed percussion and low-end movement without losing the pulse of the track.

In interviews, Quadrant and Iris have spoken about moving between heavier music and more restrained tunes rather than committing to one mood. That range helps explain why the technical side of their work can still feel playful: a bass sound has to serve the rhythm, not simply demonstrate how it was made.
