Behind the music

About RCola.

RCola is a Montreal jungle producer and DJ whose records bring reggae and dub vocals into fast-moving breakbeats. The music has travelled through Chopstick Dubplate, his Royal Crown Records imprint, and collaborations with singers from several generations of reggae.

His involvement with the Chopstick label dates to its early-2000s development alongside Jacky Murda and Liondub. Royal Crown and JungleXpeditions followed, giving him further outlets for original music and the wider international jungle scene.

Rub a Dub Wize, released in 2009, brought voices including Sister Nancy and Barrington Levy into an album setting. Individual records such as What a Bam Bam, Nuttin a Go So, and Raver Girl offer other starting points, while Champion Selecta connects him with Ranking Joe.

RCola’s authorised biography for Balanced Records describes the reggae and dub foundation of his music clearly. The more recent catalogue includes Rcola Meets Dubmatix (Jungle Remixes), continuing the exchange between dub producers, vocalists, and jungle rhythms. That shared musical language is a better guide to the records than drawing a hard border between the scenes they come from.
