Behind the music
About Rift.
Rift is a drum and bass producer who first worked in future garage. Seeing Goldie DJ introduced him to an older, rawer side of drum and bass and prompted the switch. Years later, releasing on Metalheadz brought that connection into his own catalogue.
His Black & Gold EP appeared on Dispatch in 2025, following a creative reset during lockdown. Production tuition with Philth grew into a continuing mentorship, helping Rift recover his enjoyment of making music. Teardrops was the first track written for the EP; recognising a connection with the title track gave him a direction for the rest.
The 2026 Morana EP took its name from the Slavic goddess associated with winter, death, and rebirth. Rift connected that transition with the title track’s movement from darkness towards a more uplifting second drop. Pandora drew on the Greek myth, developing from curiosity towards tension.
Speaking to Drum and Bass UK, he admitted that the finished tracks had sat for about five months before he sent the demos to Goldie. Pandora was the oldest: he rebuilt its drums after newer productions had raised his expectations of the sound. He singled out Mercury as the clearest balance of the musical expression and detailed rhythm he wanted to achieve.
