Behind the music

About Rueben.

Rueben is the solo project of Dutch producer Jelle, previously known as one half of Ordure. Where that partnership centred on experiments in sound design, Rueben gave him room to develop more personal writing, often beginning with a melody, a chord progression or a vocal that caught his attention.

The project first emerged through a remix of Grey Code’s Simple Things for Music Squad. It had begun as an Ordure remix before the direction changed, becoming an introduction to the sound he wanted to explore alone. The Prima Dollo EP with Waeys followed on Overview, growing out of sessions between the two producers when they were housemates.

His Memories EP brought the idea into sharper focus, with vocals from PHI NIX and MC Gusto. The title track reworked a much older collaboration into a more melodic setting, while Punk carried a heavier, rolling dancefloor sound. His experience making radio jingles had taught him how much a memorable melody could communicate in a small space, a lesson he carried into longer, more personal tracks.
