Behind the music

About Submorphics.

Submorphics is American producer Greg Axelrad, whose drum and bass draws on soul, hip-hop, and the electronic music of Detroit and Chicago. Growing up in Michigan and later working in the Netherlands gave him different musical surroundings, while nostalgia remained a recurring subject in his writing.

His 2020 debut album Kodak Dreams on The North Quarter connected those ideas with memories of home. The release notes describe an album rooted in soulful drum and bass and beats, shaped by old photographs and musical influences carried from the United States into a new studio environment.

Verona Highway developed an imagined journey rather than documenting a real road. Discussing the EP with UKF, Axelrad described drawing on Detroit techno and Chicago footwork while keeping his own melodic voice. That distinction helps explain why the influences remain audible without turning every track into a different genre.

He launched Rosebay Music in 2023 with the double A-side Blastoff / Cinerama. In the accompanying interview, he described the former as a blend of footwork, ghettotech, funk, and UK jungle, while the latter emphasised strings and musical detail. The label gave him control over artwork and physical releases as well as a home for that widening production range.
