Behind the music

About Subsonic.

Subsonic is the drum and bass project of British producer Harry Peters. He began making dubstep before moving into jump-up, with K Motionz introducing him to that side of D&B while they were at college. His later move towards melodic dancefloor music was a change in what he wanted to write, rather than a sudden break with his earlier work.

Speaking to UKF in 2020, he described the different writing and arrangement habits that came with that shift. He was still being asked for older jump-up tunes, including his collaboration with Tsuki, while spending more time developing vocals and melody. Releases on Elevate Records, including Last Time, helped establish that newer direction.

His own label, Subsonic : Frequencies, has since given him another home for the music. Where You Are, released with shadxwgirl in August 2025, began when she sent him demos and a cappella recordings. He built the initial track quickly, then spent longer refining it. In the studio, he has also taken inspiration from hard house and techno, keeping those interests alongside the song-led drum and bass.
