Behind the music
About Subtle Element.
Subtle Element is a producer and DJ originally from Cornwall who moved to Bristol to develop his music. He discovered drum and bass at around 16 and soon bought turntables, initially following jump-up before developing an interest in rolling tracks. In a 2016 interview with In-Reach, he described Bristol's clubs and smaller events as an important part of that move.
His first label release came through Inception Records. By the time of that interview, he was preparing music for Nurtured Beatz, Iridescent Music, and Promo Audio Music, with the Iridescent material offering a more relaxed counterpart to his usual work. His studio combined software with a Novation Bass Station II and a pad controller for playing in drum patterns.
Later releases include Crinkled, a 2022 EP whose Figure It Out received a Zero T remix, and Wookies, which included a Bassdubbers remix the following year. The original title track, Crinkled, continued the rolling approach he had discussed earlier. Alongside work associated with Dispatch, Sofa Sound, and Symmetry, his catalogue reached Medelin / IOU in 2026.
