Behind the music
About Terravita.
Terravita are an American bass music project with roots in Boston’s drum and bass scene. Chris Barlow and Jon Spero’s partnership grew out of a group that also included Matt Simmers, bringing production and vocals together with a shared interest in heavy electronic music. Their history reaches across drum and bass, drumstep, dubstep and trap.
In an early interview, Simmers recalled the group forming when he and Barlow decided to take over and reopen a drum and bass vinyl shop. Each member had a different practical role, from engineering to lyrics and label work, while decisions about the tracks remained collaborative. That band-like working method also shaped performances built around their own music and a live MC.
Up in the Club became an important early record in their move towards drumstep. The Power of Fire EP brought their work to Firepower Records, with tracks including No Room, Well Oiled Machine and This Time It’s Personal. Their 2014 album Rituals extended that approach across fourteen tracks.
