Behind the music

About The Clamps.

The Clamps is Julien Carbou, a French producer and DJ based in Toulouse whose drum and bass draws on a parallel life in hard techno and industrial music. After working on other projects, he treated the move to Toulouse as a new beginning for The Clamps, developing a close relationship with Kosenprod and later with Prolix’s Trendkill Records.

His neurofunk has a physical edge, but texture and atmosphere matter alongside its force. On the Seduction Scale EP, he set out to combine abrasive drums and bass with melancholy and storytelling, bringing ideas from his downtempo work into his drum and bass. The same release included Family Chest, an experimental collaboration with his cousin, guitarist Thomas Carbou, which stepped outside the drum and bass format.

Collaboration also runs through his other projects. With Opsen he makes up Burr Oak, a partnership he has described as growing naturally from friendship and long studio sessions. Third Colony, with Deerhill, gives his slower music another home, while Forum brings him together with Opsen and SKS.
