4hero developed from a London rave collective into the Marc Mac and Dego partnership behind Parallel Universe, Two Pages, and Reinforced Records.

Behind the music

About 4hero.

4hero grew out of the London sound system and pirate-radio network that also produced Reinforced Records. The early circle included Marc Mac, Dego, Gus Lawrence, and Ian Bardouille, with the label established in 1989. As 4hero, their first records belonged to the meeting point of hip-hop, house, and breakbeat rave. Mr Kirk’s Nightmare, released in 1990, brought a particularly stark narrative into that setting: a telephone conversation carried over a rave track.

The recording partnership came to centre on Marc Mac and Dego. Their 1994 album Parallel Universe moved further into jazz and jungle, developing ideas that would become central to their later work. Their studio experiments also included time-stretching breakbeats. In an account recalled by DJ Mag, Marc Mac described resampling a break at different pitches while preserving its length, with Journey From The Light an early result of that process.

Two Pages, issued in 1998, gave their interest in live musicians a much larger canvas. Its first half brought strings, double bass, and percussion into compositions shaped by their experience with drum and bass. Ursula Rucker and Ishmael Butler contributed vocals, while the album’s second half explored a more electronic approach. That contrast makes the record useful for understanding 4hero: the group’s identity extends beyond the rave music that first established its name.

The earlier catalogue has continued to return to circulation. Reinforced reissued Parallel Universe on vinyl and CD in June 2021, putting that chapter of the partnership alongside the members’ separate recording projects.
