Behind the music
About Akuma.
Akuma is a drum and bass producer based in Weymouth, Dorset. Neurofunk is central to his sound, with gritty bass, detailed drums and flashes of melody, while his wider productions also take in dubstep and hip-hop. Noisia, Mefjus and Phace are among his influences.
His catalogue includes work for Shadow Net Recordings, Boomslang Recordings and Root 97. Shadow Net released his On The Wall with a remix from Exile. In a 2022 UKF interview, Scout 22 recalled seeing Mampi Swift playing that version. The following year, Akuma’s Neurotoxin EP on Root 97 brought together originals, Flight Horizon with ESKR, and remixes by BaSys and Tenchu.
The BaSys connection continued on Bakuma, which brought the pair to VTO Records on Cells Interlinked: Volume 1 in 2024. Akuma also supplied a guest mix for the label’s podcast, hosted by Lee UHF, as VTO promoted its Chapter III compilation in January 2025.
In October 2026, he returned to VTO with What Is That? / The Brink, his first solo single for the label. The two tracks show a more stripped-back side of his sound, giving the drums and bass room to work while keeping the darker neurofunk character.
