Grand Theft Audio began as a Manchester drum and bass night run by James, who started the label with Robbie in early 2014. They initially wanted an outlet for their own music, but soon began signing other artists and giving producers their first full releases. By the 50th release, the roster was growing to include more producers and vocalists, with Data 3, Sl8r, and Octo Pi among the names in the catalogue. James and Robbie’s production experience also fed into their A&R work, allowing them to share what they learned in the studio with artists whose records they were releasing.

The music takes in neurofunk, liquid, and jungle, with compilations such as Full Spectrum Drum & Bass and Vibrations bringing different artists together. Grand Theft Audio 100 was released in two parts to mark another catalogue milestone, alongside the label’s individual artist projects.

James and Robbie also became part of Sola with Hanm, whose remix of their I Need You led the three to work together. Sola’s album Stars Align reflects the label’s broad approach to drum and bass: the trio wanted music for listening at home as well as tracks for clubs and festivals. Their own records have continued within the catalogue they began before Sola formed.
