Behind the music

About Andy C.

Andy C is the DJ and producer Andrew Clarke, who grew up in Hornchurch, Essex. His introduction to rave music came through his older sister's tapes and pirate radio, before a friendship with producer Ant Miles gave him a route into making records of his own.

He and Miles founded RAM Records in 1992. Recording together as Origin Unknown, they released Valley Of The Shadows in 1993. The partnership put production at the centre of the label's early catalogue, while RAM later became a home for artists including Sub Focus and Chase & Status.

Andy C's DJing is built around the interaction between records. His double drops synchronise the basslines of two tracks, creating combinations that work as a new piece of music in the set. In interviews, he has described searching for these pairings and treating the mix itself as a creative process, rather than simply playing one record after another.

The Nightlife mix series, which began in 2003, offers another way into that side of his work. Alongside his own productions, the mixes bring together music from across drum and bass and the artists around RAM.

His solo releases include the 2024 single Home In That Bass. That November, he brought his ALIVE 3.0 show to London's Drumsheds, introducing a hologram backdrop to its visual production.
