Behind the music
About Arkaik.
Arkaik is Peter Goebel, a drum and bass producer whose music has explored minimal arrangements, deep bass, and halftime rhythms. His introduction to electronic music came through his older brother, who persuaded him to listen to a breakbeat track closely enough to hear how it developed.
Roni Size’s New Forms and Bad Company’s Shot Down on Safari deepened that interest. At 15 he bought decks, spending his early practice sessions with the same handful of records before regular trips to the record shop expanded the collection. DJing and pirate radio in Reading eventually led into making his own tracks.
Diffrent Music gave his early productions a home. A mutual friend connected him with Dexta, and Stress Relief and Second Bass became releases after he sent them to the label. Its interest in minimal, halftime drum and bass matched the ideas he was working through himself.
His later label relationships include Flexout Audio, Dispatch Recordings, and Overview Music. In interviews, he has linked sound design to his work in graphic design: both begin with an idea and research before the final arrangement takes shape. He still writes for the dancefloor, but that care over the space and detail helps explain why his records can do so much with comparatively few elements.
