Behind the music
About Audiomission.
Audiomission is Shane Hope, a Bristol producer and DJ whose records grew out of the South West’s free-party scene. His work with Gyro Sounds gave him a place to hear how jungle and drum and bass behaved through a large rig, an education he carried back into the studio.
He began mixing with borrowed turntables and an assortment of speakers at house parties, then learned to play vinyl as the parties grew. Production followed, with Born in the Ghetto marking an early release and the Shaolin Warrior EP developing his dubwise sound.
One of the bass sounds in Shaolin Stance came from an unlikely source: a poster rattling against the studio desk when the sub was playing. Hope recorded it and worked the noise into the second drop. It is the sort of detail that makes the music feel connected to the room where it was made.
Gyro later developed a label alongside the soundsystem, while releases reached Deep in the Jungle, Serial Killaz, Intrigue Music, and Ghetto Dub. His own description allows jungle, roots, dub, and rolling drum and bass to meet. The dancefloor experience remains useful in the studio, where a production idea has to become something worth hearing at volume.
