Behind the music

About B-Boy 3000.

B-Boy 3000 is one of the names used by Los Angeles producer and DJ R.A.W., also known as 6Blocc. His Revelations album captures the jungle side of that musical life, with chopped breaks, bass, and vocals assembled on an E-mu Emax II sampler. Originally released in 1998, it returned digitally through Mictlan Recordings in 2014.

The album’s recording notes explain just how much work went into those tracks. With roughly fifty seconds of sampling time available, basslines were reduced to tiny loops and vocals were recorded fast, then slowed back down. Every saved second left more room for another piece of the tune. Those limits helped make the music as much an exercise in inventive editing as in collecting samples.

The original CD was mixed continuously by Hive, with mastering by E-Sassin. Mixtech and Optic also contributed tracks, so it was a small snapshot of the people making that music around him, rather than an entirely solo collection.

His own notes for Spirit connect its rap influence to growing up in LA and hearing Kid Frost. Alongside his work as 6Blocc, these B-Boy 3000 recordings show where jungle and his longstanding love of hip-hop meet.
