Behind the music

About Bachelors of Science.

Bachelors of Science is a San Francisco drum and bass group formed in 2005, bringing together musicians from England, the United States, and New Zealand. Its music gives atmosphere, melody, and rhythmic detail room to develop together. In a Kmag interview, the group described an interest in musicality and soul, with production serving the feeling of a track rather than becoming its only subject.

That approach also informed CODE Recordings, the label the group launched in 2012. Running an imprint gave the musicians a place for their own records and for music by other artists that connected with their tastes. Their discussion of writing ranged from lighter liquid material to darker experiments, making clear that the melodic identity did not mean every recording had to have the same mood.

The 2022 album Within This Moment brought those interests together across fourteen tracks. Its own release notes describe atmospheric drum and bass alongside liquid and jungle influences, with guitar textures and vocals adding different colours to the arrangements. Everytime I Do draws on neo-soul, while contributions from Robert Manos, Pat Fulgoni, and Spikey Tee give the record several vocal perspectives.

The album is a useful introduction to the group because it shows the range within its recognisable sound. Spacious passages sit beside more direct bass and drum work, and the collaborators contribute to the shape of the songs. Bachelors of Science’s atmospheric reputation is therefore a starting point for exploring the music, rather than a promise that the whole catalogue stays in one register.
