Behind the music

About BOP.

BOP is Alexander Dmitriev, a producer originally from Saint Petersburg whose music draws drum and bass into conversation with IDM, ambient music, dub techno, and garage. His recordings are closely associated with microfunk, an approach in which small percussive details carry as much character as the larger rhythmic structure. Speaking to Minimal Audio in 2026, he traced his interest in clicks, cuts, and finely worked drums to his love of IDM, while explaining that warmth and introspection came from the music he liked to hear himself.

His relationship with Med School began with Song About My Dog and Random Thoughts. The debut album Clear Your Mind followed in 2009, with The Amazing Adventures Of One Curious Pixel arriving in 2011. A third album, Punk's Not Dead, appeared in 2014 and included collaborations with Synkro, Diagram, and vocalist Elsa Esmeralda. Those albums gave his detailed electronic writing a sustained home within drum and bass while retaining influences from outside it.

Dmitriev also runs Microfunk Music. On Blips 3000, released in March 2026, the UK-based producer worked with Chime on Shimmer and poet and vocalist y/siR on Matter of Fact. The label's release notes describe dubstep and UK garage rather than treating every BOP recording as drum and bass. In his Minimal Audio interview, he explained that working across tempos had increased his interest in blending genres, and discussed cassette releases as another part of that work.

His solo recordings for Hospital Records also continued in 2026 with Rumination, introduced by the label as the first single from the Neurotics EP. Hospital's own description linked its intricate production to BOP's introspective, IDM-leaning approach.
