Behind the music
About Brain.
Brain is Juan Aguilar, a Colombian drum and bass producer and DJ from Bogotá. His interest in hardcore, punk, and metal came before drum and bass, and that background remains part of his approach to electronic music. He first encountered the music after a punk night, when DJ Sebass took over the decks. Curiosity about how those records were made eventually led to his first release in 2012.
Aguilar has stayed closely involved with the scene that introduced him to the music. In 2020, he and Novaglitch founded ID Bogotá Music to give Latin American drum and bass producers a platform for their work. Alongside releasing music, his role at the label includes mixing and mastering.
His debut album, Prisma, arrived on Dispatch Recordings in 2024. Written over almost three years, it drew on experiences in Colombia and his move to London. The album also left room for music outside drum and bass. On Kalimba, he built the melody around the instrument that gave the track its name, combining it with elements he described as intelligent, techstep, and hardcore.
The partnership with Novaglitch continued on the 2026 album Renacer, released through ID Bogotá Music. The two exchanged projects and ideas while Aguilar was in the UK, then worked together in Colombia to finish a record that had grown from plans for an EP.
His Sutura EP brings Gui, Spel, and Leks into the Dispatch catalogue alongside solo tracks. The label places the collection between darker drum and bass, early breakbeat, techstep, and techno, with Zenith, his collaboration with Leks, exploring neurofunk. Away from releases, Aguilar develops BASSCRAFT, his educational platform for producers.
