Behind the music

About Brookes Brothers.

Brookes Brothers are Dan and Phil Brookes, the drum and bass production partnership whose music draws on soul, funk, and disco. Their records combine that melodic background with the energy of club music, using vocals and chord progressions as important starting points.

They began producing together in 2002 and made an early appearance on Viper Recordings in 2006. Their association with Breakbeat Kaos led to a self-titled debut album in 2011, followed by the second album, Orange Lane, in 2017.

Collaboration has also been part of their catalogue, including work with Danny Byrd. The brothers have described beginning a track with a vocal idea and chords, then developing the arrangement once they have a musical direction they both want to pursue.

That shared process has not always required being in the same studio. In a 2019 interview, they explained how they had worked remotely across the Atlantic, exchanging material and discussing its details online. Their approach gives the partnership continuity even when the practical setup changes: the song's central idea comes first, with the production built around it.
