Behind the music

About Calibre.

Calibre is the recording name of Belfast-born producer, DJ, musician, singer, and songwriter Dominick Martin. Drum and bass sits at the centre of his work, but his catalogue also moves through dub, house, techno, ambient music, and songwriting. A restrained arrangement can carry as much weight as a densely layered track, with melody and the space around a sound doing much of the work.

His drum and bass reached a wider audience through Fabio's Creative Source, which released his debut album, Musique Concrete, in 2001. He established his own Signature Records in 2003. Alongside albums including Second Sun, the label became home to the Shelflife series, drawing on music that had remained unreleased in his archive.

That archive is one part of a much wider musical practice. In a Soundplate interview, Martin described the connections he heard between ambient and soulful music, and credited Fabio's patient mixing with helping him understand a different atmosphere on a drum and bass dancefloor. He has also released singer-songwriter albums under his own name, making his interests beyond club tempo explicit.

The 2025 album they want you was followed on 1 May 2026 by Tricklemore Sea. Written, produced, and sung by Martin, the latter moves through ambient, blues, folk, and electronic textures. Its release notes describe piano-led pieces, field recordings, and ideas revisited across different periods. For listeners discovering him through drum and bass, it offers a wider view of the same musician: voice, memory, and bass remain connected even when the pace changes.
