Behind the music
About Danny Breaks.
Danny Breaks is an Essex producer whose career connects early rave, jungle, and instrumental hip-hop. Before adopting the Danny Breaks name, he recorded as Sonz of a Loop da Loop Era for Suburban Base. The common thread across those changes has been hip-hop: its sampling methods, rhythmic invention, and emphasis on the break.
In an Atmosphere interview from 1995, he recalled making his first demos at the beginning of 1991 with a keyboard sampler, a four-track recorder, turntables, and a 909 drum machine. He established Droppin' Science towards the end of 1993, using the imprint primarily for his own recordings and collaborative projects.
The label’s numbered Volumes series drew inspiration from Double D and Steinski’s sample-based Lessons records. According to Fact’s career retrospective, it was initially intended to run for three instalments but ultimately reached 10. Recordings such as For The Thinking Positive Crew captured his movement from rave towards jungle, with atmospheric chords giving way to intricate breaks.
His musical interests also extended into slower, experimental beats, eventually leading to the Alphabet Zoo imprint and instrumental hip-hop releases. In the earlier Atmosphere interview, he resisted being described simply as mellow or aggressive, placing groove and inventive sounds above a fixed stylistic identity. His own catalogue preserves those contrasting approaches alongside the foundational Droppin’ Science recordings.
