Behind the music
About Deekline.
Deekline’s records connect jungle with the breaks and garage scenes he came through in London. He moves between those styles as both a producer and DJ, with reggae and 1990s hip-hop running through much of his musical background. Drum and bass is a major part of the story, alongside a wider interest in bass music.
His route into pirate radio began at a youth club. After some of his records were stolen, he ended up befriending the people involved, recovering the records and being invited to play on their station. He then began releasing his own take on the garage sound, leaning towards breakbeat and two-step.
The long-running partnership with Ed Solo became especially important to his jungle work. Together they helped build Jungle Cakes, which Deekline dates to around 2008. They wanted to bring fresh production to a sound they already loved, drawing on reggae and the energy of the original jungle records.
His other labels reflect different interests. Hot Cakes gave him space for playful bass music, while Gutter Gutter pursued a darker approach to garage and techno. He has never treated one style as his only priority, and that openness carries into the DJ sets. His breaks and garage records carry that same openness.
