Benny Page is a producer and DJ whose jungle connects drum and bass with reggae, dub, and sound-system culture. Growing up around his father’s records, he learned guitar and drums before studying music technology. Speaking to DJ Mag, he described reggae as an important part of the environment in which he started making music, helping explain why voices and rhythmic space are central to his records.
A connection through Bailey brought his music to SHY FX and Digital Soundboy. Turn Down the Lights became an early calling card, with reggae vocals carried by the speed and bass pressure of jungle. Rather than treating that combination as a one-off formula, Page continued developing it through original songs and collaborations with vocalists.
Champion Sound, featuring Jamaican artist Assassin, offers a useful example of that process. Page travelled to Jamaica to record vocals, discussing the sessions at Geejam in his 2014 DJ Mag interview. Working directly with singers was part of building the music, rather than simply searching for a finished sample that would fit a beat.
His own imprint, Dub Shotta, gives that work an independent home. In a later interview with Undrtone, Page explained the appeal of choosing the music and artists himself, alongside the practical work involved in running a label. The catalogue connects his own productions with other contributors, extending the same conversation between contemporary drum and bass and reggae that runs through his earlier releases.
