Behind the music

About DJ Die.

DJ Die is Daniel Kausman, a producer and DJ who moved from Devon into Bristol's music scene. Although closely associated with drum and bass, his work also draws on the funk, disco, hip-hop, and house he heard growing up.

He was part of Roni Size's Reprazent collective, whose album New Forms won the Mercury Prize in 1997. His own recording activity also developed through Clear Skyz, alongside a broader range of music that did not always have an obvious home in a specialist drum and bass catalogue.

He created Gutterfunk to give that material an outlet. Rather than leave tracks in the studio because they belonged to a different style, the label let him release music across several tempos and traditions. Its Bristol roots remain part of its stated identity.

That breadth also appears in his DJing. Die has described moving between disco and hard drum and bass in the same set, finding a connection through the groove rather than a strict genre boundary. GutterFunk continues to carry his own releases, including recordings issued in 2026, extending the same link between production, record selection, and the city's varied musical background.
