Behind the music
About DJ Hype.
DJ Hype is a British DJ, producer, and label owner whose career runs from sound systems and pirate radio into jungle and drum and bass. His work with Ganja Records, True Playaz, and Playaz Recordings connects original production with a long commitment to releasing and supporting other artists.
In a DJ Mag interview, Hype recalled jungle developing organically from the meeting of breakbeats, reggae, hip-hop, soul, and early rave music. He identified his own productions as part of that process, while giving particular credit to Shut Up and Dance for the independence and experimentation they encouraged.
His label history developed through partnerships with Pascal and DJ Zinc, with Ganja and Frontline feeding into the later True Playaz project. Records such as You Must Think First and Tiger Style sit within that early history. Zinc’s Super Sharp Shooter is an associated label release, with its authorship kept separate from Hype’s own work.
Although frequently associated with jump-up, Hype has resisted being reduced to one style. Discussing his DJing with DJ Mag, he emphasised combining different flavours of drum and bass and jungle. Original productions, the development of Playaz, and his radio and club performances show different sides of that longstanding commitment to the music.
