DJ Soul Slinger

DJ Soul Slinger is Carlos Slinger, a Brazilian-born DJ and producer whose jungle career grew out of New York’s Liquid Sky community. Music, clothes, art, and nights out were closely connected there. For Slinger, releasing records was part of the same activity as bringing people together around a shop and a dancefloor.

He and Claudia Rey started Liquid Sky in São Paulo in 1986 before moving the business to New York. Its Manhattan shops became meeting places for ravers and DJs, with parties helping the community spill beyond the counter. Slinger’s appearances at NASA and the Limelight placed him inside the city’s developing rave scene.

Jungle Sky Records / Liquid Sky NYC followed in 1994, giving that community a record label of its own. Slinger’s early catalogue included Ethiopia and Abducted, followed by Don't Believe. These records belong to the first wave of American jungle production, when the music was taking shape through local scenes as well as arriving from Britain.

His connection to the wider New York drum and bass community also runs through the shops. Liquid Sky’s own history recalls DJ Dara and DJ DB running Temple Records beneath one of its locations, before establishing Breakbeat Science. Soul Slinger’s story is rooted in those shared spaces: the records he made, the label he ran, and the people who found the music there.
