Behind the music
About Electro Organic Sound System.
Electro Organic Sound System is an early electronic music project of Jake Trussell, also known as DJ C. Formed in 1995, it brought together ambient dub, breakbeats, and jungle, with an interest in making electronic instruments produce sounds that felt warm and organic.
Its first album, Herbanism, appeared on Bliss Recordings in 1996. Across six extended pieces, Trussell explored the relationship between natural textures and electronic construction. The recording process was hands-on: analogue synthesisers, drum machines, samplers, and outboard effects were often recorded directly to a four-track cassette. The project name and album title both reflected that meeting of the organic and the artificial.
A second album, Roots Wreck Remix, followed through Varunee Recording Group in 2000. The music belonged to the same period in which Trussell helped build Boston's experimental electronic circuit through the Toneburst collective, working alongside other artists, including DJ /rupture, to create spaces for music that did not fit conventional club bookings.
Both albums returned through Trussell's Mashit label in 2011, bringing recordings from the physical-release era into digital circulation. For the 20th anniversary of Herbanism in 2016, he revisited the material as a specially edited mix, returning to music originally assembled through hardware and cassette recording.
