Behind the music

About Future Cut.

Future Cut are Darren Lewis and Tunde Babalola, a production partnership formed through the Manchester club scene. Their original drum and bass work developed alongside jazz and funk influences, with recordings and DJ appearances taking them beyond their local scene. Their subsequent songwriting career grew from the same studio partnership.

Their early catalogue includes Dominator, Bloodline, Horns 2000, and 20/20, with music appearing through Renegade Hardware and other drum and bass labels. Their own archive also preserves collaborations such as Plastic with Marcus Intalex and Homicide with Futurebound, keeping those shared recordings attached to their actual credits.

Working with Jenna G as Un-Cut took them into a more vocal-led setting, including Midnight and the album The Un-Calculated Some. In their UKF interview, Lewis described that major-label experience as the catalyst for a move away from the underground circuit. A later introduction to Lily Allen led to co-writing and production on Smile and LDN.

Their return to drum and bass involved practical archive work: an intern catalogued old DAT recordings and transferred them into usable files. Revisiting that material helped reconnect the pair with earlier studio sessions. Their own catalogue subsequently brought reissues, remixes, and recordings such as Exocet, made with Submotive, into the same outlet.
