René LaVice is a Canadian drum and bass producer with a background in filmmaking as well as music. His catalogue connects the club-focused releases of RAM Records with vocal songwriting and his own DeVice imprint. LaVice has described his approach as deliberately diverse, combining aggressive bass-heavy productions with soulful vocal reworkings that retain their club focus.
His debut album, Insidious, arrived on RAM in 2013. The single package The Calling / Freudian includes a collaboration with Ivy Mairi on The Calling, combining vocal writing with the production associated with his earlier records. By the time of his 2025 UKF interview, DeVice had become an additional outlet for his music and for the artists working around the label.
In that conversation, LaVice explained the personal circumstances behind The Calling. He was preparing to leave Canada for the UK, and the music carried both excitement about the move and sadness at physically leaving family and relationships behind. Working with Mairi, he tried to preserve that complicated mood rather than turn it into a simply happy or sad song. The explanation gives the recording a human context beyond its club reception: its vocal and arrangement grew from a specific transition in his life. Alongside Insidious, it shows how direct dancefloor production and more reflective writing can coexist in his work.
