Behind the music
About Graysound.
Graysound is Auckland DJ and producer Gray Russell, whose work crosses drum and bass, dubstep, and other bass music. Earlier DJ names included Fourtwenty and Substrait, while his radio work has included Sub Session and guest mixes for George FM.
In 2020 he released Shapes & Colours with vocalist Elipsa. Their partnership also reached the stage: at Auckland’s Liquid Lowdown in October that year, Elipsa sang live while Graysound mixed. The track later received remixes from Sly Chaos, Medium, and Caidance.
His 2023 album Champion Sound, released by Iron Shirt Recordings, took a different route through bass music. Conceived for his own sound system, the project brought reggae references and vocal collaborations into a hybrid format, with contributions from Rider Shafique, Natty Campbell, Young Gho$t, and Rains.
His Chopped Up Tuesday recording from July 2018 put liquid drum and bass and rollers alongside underground hip-hop and grime; other shows from that year also included deeper dubstep.
