Behind the music
About Grimesy.
Grimesy is a Lancaster drum and bass producer and DJ whose route into production grew from the city’s local scene. In his UKF interview, he credited MC Matty Banton with encouraging him to make music and explained that studying at Manchester’s Midi School gave him his production foundations.
He has worked with Speaker Louis and Conrad Subs, with Can’t Touch on Deep In The Jungle among the collaborations he identified as an early point of recognition. Another important connection came through watching Sahala host a Bloc2Bloc stream. Grimesy contacted her online, and their work together resulted in The Purpose, released through ProgRAM.
His music has also been signed to Born on Road, Chopstick Dubplate, Formation, Subwoofah, Nuusic, and Original Key. Jungle remains part of his personal relationship with the music: hearing Original Nuttah at school was a formative moment, while Break, Bladerunner, and Chase & Status are among the producers he has named as inspirations. Playing Lancaster’s Highest Point Festival, and following High Contrast at its afterparty, brought that involvement back to his hometown.
